On Earth Day, AOC Celebrates Millions of Dollars for Green New Deal Community Projects, All Across the U.S. 

The Bronx, NY -  On Earth Day, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is celebrating the recent allocation of millions in federal funding for ‘Green-New Deal certified’ community projects.   In March, President Biden signed into law an omnibus bill that fully funded community projects that had been requested by Members of Congress (aka - earmarks). Sixty of these community projects meet the Green New Deal’s standards for green jobs, environmental justice and decarbonization. On Earth Day, the Congresswoman is celebrating this achievement by awarding these 60 community projects, submitted by 36 Members, an official Green New Deal (GND) certification. 

“These Green New Deal community projects are a testament to when people say that we can’t, we say, ‘watch us work’,’’ said Rep. Ocasio-Cortez in a statement. “We are going to find creative ways  to make sure we can get this done, and fight climate change, so that we can secure jobs and environmental justice for our communities.”

Stretching from Hawaii to Vermont, GND-certified Community Projects include jobs and training programs in sustainable building, rail expansion, bike infrastructure, trail infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and more. They also include efforts to curb the effects of climate change through resiliency, restoration, and preparation projects. Some GND projects also focus on environmental justice through the implementation of ADA-compliant green infrastructure, reimagining public spaces in frontline communities, and providing education and workforce training to underserved communities. 

In the Congresswoman’s district of NY-14, $795,000 was allocated to SUNY Maritime College to allow them to train 300 students in jobs for New York’s growing wind energy industry.   Rep. Peter Welch of Vermont secured $1.2 million to reduce flood risk and increase resilience of the Tri-Park, the state’s largest resident-owned mobile home cooperative comprising more than 300 homes owned and occupied by 800 low and moderate income residents. Rep. Nikema Williams of Georgia received $750,000 for the installation of a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array and lithium-ion battery storage on a Decatur City building.  Rep. Andy Levin of Michigan secured $650,000 to replace a 100-year-old watermain and 70 lead service lines, investing in infrastructure and safe, clean drinking water.
