Bronx Insider: Sports Desk: Manhattan Men's Basketball Edges Army West Point Saturday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jaspers Edge Black Knights Saturday at London Basketball Classic.

LONDON, England – Manhattan hung on to beat Army West Point 72-71 in the consolation game of the 2022 London Basketball Classic on Saturday at the Copper Box Stadium in London.

“Tonight, we handled adversity very well,” said interim head coach RaShawn Stores. “We fell short on Thursday, and today, we learned from that. We know it is part of the process. I am very happy with this team.”

Stores continued, “This was a great experience. We got to learn about ourselves and about the culture in London. That is how you grow in life, share knowledge.”

Manhattan (2-3) made the defensive stop it needed to leave London with a win. The Jaspers forced Army West Point’s (2-5) Jalen Rucker into a floater from the left elbow that was no good at the buzzer.

Josh Roberts extended the Manhattan lead to four, 72-68, after hitting two free throws with 24 seconds to play. On the ensuing Black Knights’ possession, Coleton Benson was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 16 seconds to play. Coleton hit all three free throws to make it a one-point game.

A missed free throw from Marques Watson set up the final possession for Army West Point. Nick Brennen and Watson put pressure on Rucker as he attempted the game-winning shot.

The Jasper comeback started in the latter stages of the first half as the Jaspers reeled off 11 straight points to make it a 30-25 game with 2:35 to play in the first half. The second half saw the Jaspers erase a five-point halftime deficit to take and build a lead.

Raziel Hayun had a steal and a layup to give Manhattan a 37-36 lead with 17:14 to play, a lead they would not surrender. That completed the comeback that saw the Jaspers trail by as many as 16 in the first half. The Black Knights did tie the game at 67 on back-to-back 3-pointers with 2:18 to play in the game, but Stewart responded with a three of his own for Manhattan with 1:55 left.

Roberts had six of the first 10 points for the Jaspers after halftime. Nick Brennen scored seven of his 11 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to help Manhattan keep Army West Point at bay.

The offense was led by Roberts’ 17 points (7-9) and nine rebounds. Stewart finished with 14 off the bench, while Ant Nelson was also in double figures with 13. Nelson added six assists and six steals. Defensively, the Jaspers forced 20 turnovers and scored 32 points off them.

Benson finished the night with a game-high 20 points to pace Army West Point.

Manhattan takes the floor next on Thursday, Dec. 1, against Fairfield inside Draddy Gymnasium. It is the MAAC opener for the Jaspers, and the Bronx Chamber of Commerce will be honored too.
