FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Manhattan Fends Off Canisius for Ninth Win.
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan fended off a Canisius rally to win 80-75 on Sunday afternoon inside Draddy Gymnasium. Jose Perez led the way for the Jaspers with a season-high 33 points.
Manhattan (9-5, 2-2 MAAC) led by as many as 21 in the second half only for Canisius (5-11, 1-4) cut the lead down to two multiple times inside the final three minutes. However, the Jaspers did not let the Golden Griffins tie the game and scored their last six from the charity stripe to close the game.
After leading by 13 at the half, the Jaspers used a 12-0 run over 1:20 to take a 20-point lead, 53-33. Three steals off of the press led to easy buckets for the Jaspers.
The Golden Griffins started the comeback with an 8-0 run over 2:05 to cut the lead to 13, 64-51. After Perez scored his 25th point to stop the spurt, Canisius went on a 15-3 run over 3:34 that brought the game to 68-66 with 3:33 to play. Five different players scored in the run for Canisius.
Perez and Samir Stewart scored the final 12 points for the Jaspers—all on free throws.
The afternoon started well for the Jaspers. Manhattan opened the game with 13 of the first 18, with seven coming from Perez. A 17-4 run over 4:38 where the Jaspers went 8-8 from the field created separation and gave Manhattan a 30-13 with more than eight minutes to play in the opening half.
On offense, the Jaspers shot a season-best 63-percent from the field. Manhattan outscored Canisius by seven from free-throw line.
Perez finished 12-19 from the field and 9-12 from the line for his 33. The forward added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Stewart was also in double figures with 11, and Elijah Buchanan had 10 for Manhattan.
Ahamadou Fofana had 15 points to pace the Golden Griffins.
Manhattan returns to action for game two of this three-game homestand on Tuesday against Niagara in a rescheduled game from Jan. 2. The Jaspers and Purple Eagles tip at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
