RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan needed overtime to get past Rider, 84-78, and extend its winning streak to three.
Manhattan (14-11, 7-9 MAAC) outscored Rider (10-16, 6-10) 9-3 in the extra session after Rider forced overtime by coming back from down eight in the final 96 seconds.
After trailing at the half, the Jaspers held the Broncs scoreless for over five minutes to get within two, 50-48. Romar Reid then dove on the floor, grabbed the loose ball, and found Josh Roberts streaking for a transition dunk that tied the game at 54 with 9:13 to play.
A Samba Diallo corner 3-point gave the Jaspers their first lead since 13-11 at 57-54 with less than 8:30 to play. The triple from Diallo started a 16-8 stretch over five minutes for the Jaspers, who extended the lead to 75-67 with 1:36 to play. Diallo gave Manhattan a 62-59 lead when hit converted a 3-point play off a driving layup during the stretch. Five different Jaspers scored in the run, with six from Jose Perez.
Perez hit a step-back jumper with 1:36 to play, which was the last field goal by the Jaspers in regulation. Rider scored the final eight points of regulation and tied the game at 75 with nine seconds from Mervin James at the free-throw line.
In the extra session, Perez scored seven of his game-high 23. Defensively, Josh Roberts had a pair of blocks. The senior denied Dimencio Vaughn on the first possession and then Dwight Murray Jr. inside the final 30 seconds with the score 82-78 Manhattan. Marquess Watson blocked an Allen Powell 3-point attempt to force a shot clock violation in front of the Rider bench.
Five Jaspers were in double figures. Perez was joined by Elijah Buchanan (13), Roberts (12), Ant Nelson (12), and Warren Williams (10). Roberts added 11 rebounds and four blocks for his fourth double-double in five games.
Powell led Rider with 17 points. Three other Broncs were in double figures.
The Jaspers return to action on Friday, Feb. 25, at Marist at 7 p.m. The game will be on ESPNU from Poughkeepsie.
