HACKENSACK, N.J. – Manhattan had five players score in double figures, but Fairleigh Dickinson snuck past the Jaspers 77-74 on Sunday evening.
Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1) scored five straight points to build a 73-67 lead with 2:18 to play, which turned out to be just large enough to keep Manhattan (0-2) at bay. The Jaspers answered five straight of their own in the form of an Elijah Buchanan 3-pointer and a Nick Brennen layup to make it 73-72 with 49 seconds to play.
The Knights scored on their ensuing possession. Then Ant Nelson took it the length of the court for a quick two, bringing Manhattan back to within one, 75-74, with 14 seconds to play. Fairleigh Dickinson made two free throws after being fouled to secure its winning margin.
The game was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than eight points. The game featured 15 lead changes and seven ties. There were only two six-point leads in the second half. Fairleigh Dickinson’s with less than three minutes to play, and Manhattan’s 51-45 advantage at the 13:58 mark.
Buchanan, Brennen, and Nelson were three of the five Jaspers in double figures. Josh Roberts paced the Jaspers with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Buchanan finished with 16 points, Nelson had 13, and Brennen tallied 12. Marques Watson was the fifth in double figures with 10 points.
Nelson added eight assists, which tied a career-high. Manhattan had 21 as a team on 28 made field goals. Buchanan pulled down eight rebounds too.
Ansley Almonor led four Knights in double figures with 22 points. Grant Singleton added 20 of his own.
Manhattan returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 18, inside Draddy Gymnasium against Mount St. Vincent at 7 p.m.
